It is with deep sadness that we learn of the passing of Professor Orazio Svelto on January 10, 2026. He was a key figure in the Italian and international scientific community, an undisputed master of optics and photonics, and a pioneer in laser studies, one of the most innovative and important fields of research of the last century.
Orazio Svelto dedicated his life to research, education, and the cultural growth of entire generations of scholars. His scientific contribution, his vision, and his ability to combine rigor, passion, and humanity have left an indelible mark on the history of Italian science.
As the Italian Society of Optics and Photonics, of which Professor Svelto was an honorary member since 2010, we lose not only a scientist of extraordinary value, but also an example of intellectual integrity, generosity, and commitment to the community. His thoughts, his works, and his teaching will continue to inspire our work and the future of photonics.
